Herbal medicine is an ancient form of medicine that is widely used today. Leanne is trained as a classical herbalist and uses her intimate knowledge and understanding of medicinal plants to maintain good health and treat ill health. Prescribing an individual herbal remedy is an art that is developed over time, based on knowledge, understanding and experience. Herbal medicine is a safe and effective form of treatment when prescribed by a trained and experienced herbalist. There are various ways to take herbal medicines. Herbal tinctures and extracts in liquid form are taken orally or used externally. Herbal ointments may be used externally for skin conditions, burns and insect bites or stings. Herbs may be taken in the form of a tea (infusion) or included in cooking as a food or spice (e.g. basil, tumeric). What do herbs contain and how do they work? Herbs contain various chemical compounds and nutrients such as minerals, vitamins, essential fatty acids, amino acids and oils. As a simple illustration, aromatic and resinous oils such as thymol in thyme are a germicide effective against streptococcal infections. The essential oil of lavender may be helpful for insomnia or for restless sleeps. Chamomile contains calcium salts for maintenance of healthy bones, and in combination with magnesium reduces cramps and tension that cause symptoms such as period pain. Herbal remedies can assist with many symptoms of ill health such as digestive and bowel disorders, skin conditions, low immunity and more. Herbal formulas are prescribed at the end of each consultation.
